Shoe Rack & Longboard Rack

May 2019 - Aug 2019

Background

My roommates and I had problems regarding clutter in the entryway of our home. My roommates enjoyed longboarding and owned various longboards but did not have optimal storage space for their boards. We also did not own a shoe rack and would have shoes strewn around the entryway that were often tripped over. One of my roommates and I had an idea to design and make a shoe rack and longboard rack to reduce entryway clutter.

Goals

  • Design inexpensive longboard rack inspired by snowboard racks and longboard wall racks to hold 6+ longboards.

  • Design inexpensive shoe rack to store at least 2 pairs of shoes for 6 people that will fit in the space of the shoe closet in the rental home.

Reflection

I was able to use a jigsaw, hand tools, belt sander, and wood burning tool for final products. I was lucky to have the space and tools to work on this project and was satisfied with the outcome. The pieces are still used daily for their intended purposes today and are holding up well. To meet the design goal of 2 pairs of shoes for 6 people, the use of the floor underneath the shoe rack was used. At least 4 pairs of shoes are able to fit on each shelf and on the bottom of the shoe rack. The longboard rack fits the intended amount of longboards, with an additional flat space on the top of the rack as well.

Wooden Music Box Housing

Feb 2020

Background

Aimed to create housing for a Kikkerland Music Box for a gift. The music box would feed in special paper through the music box when cranked.

Goals

  • Seamlessly feed through paper when music box is cranked.

  • Provide adequate storage for music box and music paper when not in use.

  • Design seamless looking housing.

In order to fabricate the box, I obtained laser-cutter safe wood and used SolidWorks to map out the separate pieces of the housing. I was able to laser cut the pieces, use wood glue to bind the separate pieces. I purchased and attached hinges as well as secured the music box to the inside of the housing.

Reflection

I had one major issue pop up while working on this project. I miscalculated the location of the crank of the music box and had to carve the hole for the crank larger after the piece was laser cut so the crank would be in the correct location.

Otherwise, the project turned out better than I had expected. I was excited to use a laser cutter for a personal project. In a future iteration, I would look at different methods to secure the music box as the method I had chosen was not ideal for frequent use.
